The Tampa Bay Devil Rays play in the East Division of the American League. They were added to the league as an expansion team in 1998, and so far have won no pennants or titles of any kind.

The Devil Rays' first game was against the Detroit Tigers, and in retrospect was a harbinger of times to come: they lost 11-6 that day and have yet to record a winning season. They have managed to send one player to the Hall of Fame-- third baseman Wade Boggs. He played with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998 and 1999, and his number 12 jersey is the only one officially retired by the team. The Devil Rays' home stadium is Tropicana Field, which was originally built in 1986 in anticipation of acquiring an MLB team at that time.

The team is currently owned by Stuart Sternberg and managed by Joe Maddon. The bench coach is Bill Evers and the bullpen is managed by Bobby Ramos. Devil Rays fans are quick to cite the popular 2002 Dennis Quaid film "The Rookie" as a Tampa Bay baseball story, though the fact that it is a story of a high school baseball coach being drafted onto the team's roster might better explain the lack of talent in the dugout than exemplify the merits of the team.
