The roots of the Cardinals still-strong rivalry with the Chicago Cubs dates back to those earliest days of baseball, when the 1885 World Series between the two ended in a dispute and was never resolved. The St. Louis Cardinals boast many famous alumni, including 24 Hall of Famers ranging from Grover Cleveland "Pete" Alexander (1926-1929) to Ozzie Smith - "The Wizard of Oz" (1982-1996).

The Cardinals continue to play in Busch Stadium, as they have since 1953 when it was named by owner Gussie Busch. The current Busch ballpark is the third renovation of that space. The team is currently owned by Southwest Bank's William DeWitt, Jr. and managed by Tony La Russa. The bench coach is Joe Pettini and the bullpen is managed by Dave Duncan. A recent piece of Cardinals trivia is the team's 83-win 2006 season represented the fewest total wins for any team that ever went on to win the World Series. In contrast, the previous two years they actually won the greatest number of games in all of Major League Baseball but did not win the Championship.
