A common nickname for the Padres is "The Friars". The team came into existence in 1969 as one of four expansion teams. In their four decades of play, the Padres have earned several unfortunate distinctions, including that of being the team that was no-hit by Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis while he was under the influence of hallucinogenic drug LSD. In 1990 the team chose Roseanne Arnold to sing The Star-Spangled Banner between games of a doubleheader with the Reds, and her screeching rendition caused a firestorm of controversy and criticism for the Padres. She finished her performance with a hearty grab of the crotch and spit on the ground, which was widely seen as a comment on the anthem itself rather than a parody of baseball players.

San Diego didn't have any notable alumni until the very first Padres Hall of Famer Dave Winfield was elected in 2001. More notable are some famous Padres fans, including Jerry Lewis, astronaut Wally Schirra and fictional Sopranos character Finn DeTrolio. In 2006 the Padres won a division title but couldn't make it in the NLCS. Will next year be the season they go all the way?
