Inexplicably nicknamed "The Buccos", the Pittsburgh Pirates first came to life in 1876 as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies. In total, the Pirates have won five World Series, though the team's most notable postseason appearance was a losing one in the very first World Series ever played.

Like all baseball teams, the Pirates had some great years and some terrible years as the talent on the roster ebbed and flowed. Still, somewhere in that time the Pirates managed to invent a new concept in the sport-- that of the "closer". This idea of a new pitcher coming in exclusively for the last few innings of the game is credited to 1958 coach Danny Murtaugh who repeatedly played Elroy Face late in the game.

Another notable Pirates alum is the late right fielder Roberto Clemente. Known as much for his charitable work off the field as his tremendous capabilities, Clemente was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame after a tragic plane crash ended his life while he was on his way to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The Pittsburgh Pirates of today hope to carry on that tradition of fine sportsmanship and charismatic appeal in PNC Park.

With a roster that includes first baseman Adam LaRoche, third baseman Freddy Sanchez and Oliver Perez and Cory Stewart, manager Jim Tracy is well on his way to achieving that goal.
