The Oakland Athletics (or "A's") play in the Western Division of the American League. They have won nine World Series and and 15 ALCS. The franchise originated in Philadelphia in 1901, then moved to Kansas City before finally arriving in Oakland, CA in 1968.

The first years in Oakland yielded a string of three World Series titles in 1972, 1973 and 1974. Unfortunately, they would not win another until 1989 under the ownership of Levi jeans magnate Walter A. Haas, Jr. Since then, the franchise has changed hands more than once and current owner Lewis Wolff purchased a 2005 team that would go on to lose the 2006 ALCS.

The current Oakland dugout features stars Mike Piazza and Huston Street, along with Bobby Crosby and Eric Chavez. These Oakland players will soon find themselves in a new ballpark and a new city. In November 2006, the team announced a plan to move to a new ballpark called Cisco Field in Fremont, CA. It remains to be seen whether the move to Fremont will create any new rivalries in California baseball, but an in-state move like that might heat up the existing tensions between the Athletics, Dodgers, Giants and Padres.
