There are six division champions, and as there are eight spots, the last two are decided as "wild cards." There are three tiers in the playoff series. Each league, both the American and the National, hold a best-of-five-game series for each division, titled the American or National League Division Series, or ALDS/NLDS.

A best-of-seven series is then played between the teams remaining in each division of each league, called respectively, the American League Championship Series and the National League Championship Series. The World Series takes the champions from each league and pits them against each other, and the winner takes all the best-of-seven games.

Each division's top three teams are seeded based on their records. The fourth seed is chosen as a wild card. The playoffs are played with the number one seed playing the number four, and two playing three. This is true unless the number one seed is from the same division as the wild card, then it goes one and three, two and four. Teams from the same division cannot meet in the first round. The team with the better seed gets home field advantage.
