True to Lone Star state tradition, the team was originally named after a gun-- the Colt .45. The "Colts" played as the official team of Houston until 1965 when the team moved to the new Astrodome and took the name "Astros". They now play in Minute Maid Park.

The newly minted Astros had their first big break when free agent Nolan Ryan signed on to pitch in 1979. Ryan's strong pitching laid the foundation for a pitching-oriented team strategy that later iterations of the Astros lineup would reinforce. Fellow pitchers Jim Deshaies and Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott followed in Ryan's footsteps.

In addition to stellar pitching, the Astros are known for the "Killer Bs" in the dugout: originals Craig Biggio, Derek Bell, Jeff Bagwell, and Sean Berry, then more recently Lance Berkman, Eric Bruntlett, and Chris Burke. With all the elements for success in place, the Astros finally won a league pennant in 2005.

Unfortunately, the World Series Champions title has proved elusive so far, but the Astros are hoping that their current upward trend will continue through October 2007.
