The origin of the "Indians" name is unclear and has been linked in some histories to Native American player Louis Sockalexis and in others to the historically proficient Atlanta Braves. The logo of the team, depicting a smiling man with a red face and a feather in his hair, is widely criticized as offensive and ethnically insensitive, as is the mascot's name, "Chief Wahoo".

Regardless of the name's provenance and the logo's questionable appropriateness, however, the Indians have firmly cemented themselves as hometown heroes in the hearts and minds of Ohio baseball fans. The team really came to live in the 1940s, when legend Bill Veeck bought the team and practiced his inimitable gift for promotion by immediately moving to the cavernous Cleveland Stadium from League Park.

Veeck broke the color barrier in the league by signing Larry Doby in 1947 and the next year the team won their first championship in nearly three decades. Eventually Veeck was forced to sell the team but his history of showmanship and good baseball stayed with the Indians. Todays' Cleveland team plays in Jacobs Field to sold out crowds of devout fans.

They haven't won a World Series since 1948, but Ohio's residents remain hopeful that this year will be the one that reclaims glory for the hometown heroes.
