Originally formed in 1893 as the Sioux City Cornhuskers, the club spent five seasons in St. Paul, Minnesota before moving to Chicago in 1900 as the "White Stockings". The very next year the new team won the American League's first major-league pennant and earned the shortened name "White Sox" when Chicago Tribune editors cut it to fit headlines heralding the victory.

In 1906 the Sox beat out intracity rivals the Cubs in a World Series upset that earned them the nickname "Hitless Wonders" for their ability to win the Series despite having the lowest team batting average in the league. The pitching and defense that earned them that title remained the team's core competencies for decades. During that stretch of baseball history, some legendary stars were born in Comiskey Park.

Under the management of Pants Rowland, the team welcomed outfielders Shoeless Joe Jackson and Happy Felsch, second baseman Eddie Collins, first baseman Chick Gandil, shortstop Swede Risberg and pitcher Lefty Williams. Today's White Sox lineup features new celebrity players Joe Crede, AJ Pierzynski and Javier Vasquez, who hope to lead the Sox to their second World Series of the 21st century.
