Possibly the most popular baseball team in the Western Division of the National League, the Colorado Rockies have been playing since 1993.

Finally, alongside newscomers Florida Marlins, the team came to life and played their first ever game against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. That first season was a struggle as the new Rockies team learned to work as a cohesive unit, but the baseball-hungry Denver fans stuck by their team and filled Mile High Stadium game after game.
That enthusiasm paid off in consistently improved performance. By 1996 the Rockies had Andres Galarraga, Ellis Burks, Dante Bichette and Vinny Castilla all hitting more than 40 home runs each and more than 60 stolen bases among them. A slight controversy overshadowed this team's recent gains, however, when Rockies ownership was criticized for enforcing an explicity Christian code of conduct in the clubhouse.
The claims were later refuted by teams and owners and have generally been laid to rest by the media. While this young team has yet to win a championship, the next season looks good as the Rockies prepare to come out of the gate strong in the rarefied air of Coors Field.
